Entrepreneur, Scientist, Inventor, Communicator

About Me
Hi! My name is Laura Stoy, and I am an entrepreneur, patent-pending inventor, and a PhD-trained scientist. In 2021, I completed my PhD in environmental engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology, where I studied resource recovery, turning trash into treasure. Specifically, I developed a method to sustainably recover valuable rare earth elements (REEs) from wastes like coal fly ash, a byproduct of burning coal for electricity. My advisor and I filed a patent on this work in 2019.
I am now working full-time as CEO of RocketJudge.com, a startup I co-founded during graduate school that streamlines competitions large and small. Check us out to learn more!
Interests
Beyond the lab, I'm passionate about science literacy and storytelling: education, teaching, STEM outreach, and journalism. In my free time, I enjoy reading, swing dancing, and hanging out with the best dog. You can see my CV here.
